Artist biography: Fritz von Uhde was a German painter who mainly executed genre and religious subjects. He was admitted to the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden in 1866 and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in 1877, where he became deeply influenced by the Dutch old masters. He continued his studies of them in Paris from 1879 under.

He began his artistic studies at the Dresden Academy in 1866, but, totally at variance with the spirit prevailing there, entered upon a military career and served in the army until 1877, when he took up painting again, at Munich, giving his attention especially to the old Dutch masters.
